As we age, our faces naturally lose subcutaneous fat. The facial muscles are then working closer to the skin surface, so smile lines and crow's feet become more apparent. Other factors that affect the facial skin include sun exposure, heredity, and lifestyle.
Cosmetic Fillers have added new dimensions to the field of cosmetic aesthetics, allowing new forms of facial rejuvenation and wrinkle treatment without surgery. Cosmetic Fillers are used to increase tissue volume (as with lip augmentation), reduce wrinkles, and improve skin’s overall contour. They are used to literally “fill” skin that has lost tissue volume. The new fillers are made of natural ingredients such as calcium and hyaluronic acid. Most Cosmetic Fillers have an immediate result which lasts from 6 months to 2 years. Fillers can:

There are a number of FDA-approved Cosmetic Fillers, so how will you determine which is best for you? Nob Hill Medical & Aesthetics has extensive experience with the fillers listed below and Dr. Bukov will be happy to discuss the benefits of each during your consultation. Your specific circumstances and desired outcome are foremost as Dr. Bukov presents options and makes a recommendation.
Juvederm® Voluma™ XC injectable gel is a Hyaluronic Acid (HA) filler FDA-approved to instantly add volume to the facial area. It provides you a subtle lift, helping to restore contour and a more youthful profile.
Restylane® is an injectable gel. The hyaluronic acid is a tissue-friendly substance closely resembling the hyaluronic acid that occurs naturally in the body.
Restylane® Lyft is an FDA-approved dermal filler for implantation into the skin for the correction of moderate to severe facial folds and wrinkles, such as nasolabial folds. Restylane® Lyft differs from Restylane® primarily in the size of the particles and the depth of the required injection. Restylane® Lyft, used for deeper wrinkles, has larger particles that are injected deeper into the skin than Restylane®.
Belotero Balance® Dermal Filler is made of a material called hyaluronic acid or HA. The flexibility of the product makes it strong enough to handle deep treatment areas such as nasolabial folds (smile lines around the mouth), yet soft enough to treat more delicate areas such as vertical lip lines (thin lines that appear above the lip line).
Radiesse® Volumizing Filler adds the volume and lift needed to diminish the signs of aging. What makes Radiesse® truly unique is the ability of the product to act as a scaffold under the skin, providing structure and stimulating your own natural collagen to grow. The production of natural collagen continues for several months, which typically extends beyond the initial effect of Radiesse® Volumizing Filler.
Fillers are safe cosmetic dermal injectables that naturally restore the facial volume that is lost in the face with aging. They are used to correct facial wrinkles and folds as to enhance facial contours.
Some fillers, such as Juvederm, Restylane and Perlane are made of hyaluronic acid which is a natural substance that already exists in the human body, providing volume and fullness to the skin. These fillers are biodegradable and completely biocompatible with human hyaluronic acid. Radiesse, another filler, is composed of synthetic calcium hydroxyl apatite (CaHa) micro particles that are suspended in a gel. Calcium hydroxyl apatite is a biomaterial with over 20 years of use in orthopedics, neurosurgery, dentistry, and opthamology, and is the primary material in bones and teeth.
Fillers have been used widely around the world for many years. There is virtually no risk of animal-based disease transmission or allergic reaction so no allergy testing is required.
Fillers are injected below the surface of the skin using a fine needle in the area of the volume loss. They provide volume and fullness to the skin. In the U.S., fillers like Perlane and Restylane are used only for the treatment of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds.
The most commonly reported side effects are temporary redness, swelling, and bruising at the injection site. These typically resolve within three to seven days.
In order to minimize bruising, patients should avoid using aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, St. Johns Wort, high dose of vitamin E, and Omega 3 fatty acid supplements prior to treatment, because they may increase bruising or bleeding at the injections sites. Also, make sure to notify your practitioner if you have previously suffered from facial cold sores, so that they may give you an antiviral medication to prevent an outbreak.
Our clinical experience has shown that the aesthetic correction achieved with fillers is as follows: Restylane and Juvederm last four to six months while Perlane lasts up to eight to twelve months. Evidence shows that having a touch up treatment before the products have fully absorbed will enhance the effect. Radiesse lasts around one to two years, after that the gel carrier dissipates over a few months, allowing for new tissue infiltration. Fillers are not permanent.
Botulinum Toxin A is a purified protein that blocks nerve transmission and relaxes the muscle of facial expression. Fillers fill wrinkles and folds of the skin. Our studies offer that combining fillers and Botulinum Toxin A offer superior and longer lasting results.
Fillers are customized procedures based on your specific needs, so the cost may vary from patient to patient. This will be discussed in your consultation.
Generally after the consultation, the procedure takes only 45 minutes.
The results are practically instantaneous.
